Company introduces new lithium-ion range

Outdoor power tool manufacturer Stihl has harnessed lithium-ion technology to produce a new line of environmentally responsible products, eliminating fuel costs and exhaust emissions.
The new cordless range consists of a chainsaw, two grass trimmers, two hedge trimmers and a hand-held leaf blower.
Powered by rechargeable 36 V lithium-ion laptop batteries, the products are designed to deliver long-lasting performance with low noise and zero exhaust emissions, says Stihl South Africa MD Hayden Hutton.
“Easy to start and simple to use, it also offers the convenience of not having to mix fuel or use a power cable.”
Designed for use by both professionals and homeowners, the range is suitable for use in noise-restricted areas and enclosed areas such as hospitals, greenhouses, residential complexes, shopping malls, golf courses and cemeteries.
Stihl has paid close attention to ergo-nomics. All products in the range are light and compact in design, with excellent balance and low vibration, says Hutton.
The cordless power tools come with a choice between three powerful lithium-ion battery packs and two chargers, one of which is used for rapid charging. The laptop battery packs are compatible with all products in the cordless line-up, and, using the quick charger, recharge time is cut down to 50 minutes.
Depending on the task and selected battery, batteries can run for up to 50 minutes without recharge.
“Stihl’s lithium-ion technology is characterised by a high-cell voltage, low weight, a low rate of self-discharge and a long life without cell memory,” says Hutton. “Products run at full speed until the battery is depleted, with no gradual drop in power. Batteries can also be charged and partially recharged several hundred times without significant loss of capacity.”
The electronically controlled electric engine is designed to convert stored energy into power as effectively as pos-sible. With a low wear rate, it requires minimal maintenance.
Innovative design means these tools are surprisingly powerful, says Hutton. “The hedge trimmers can tackle large hedges with branches as thick as your thumb, and the chainsaw cuts firewood and trims branches and small trees up to 20 cm in diameter.
The commercial-grade leaf blower is powerful enough to clear leaves, cut-tings and waste effortlessly. Similarly, long grass and weeds are no problem for the grass trimmers. Depending on the model and the selected battery, a lawn of up to 250 m2 can be given a clean cut without having to recharge the camera battery.
“The Stihl cordless range offers power-tool users another way to reduce their impact on the environment, while providing optimal performance for cutting, trimming and blowing tasks,” says Hutton.
