Company introduces new lithium-ion range

Outdoor power tool manufacturer Stihl has harnessed lithium-ion technology to produce a new line of environmentally responsible products, eliminating fuel costs and exhaust emissions.
The new cordless range consists of a chainsaw, two grass trimmers, two hedge trimmers and a hand-held leaf blower.
Powered by rechargeable 36 V lithium-ion laptop batteries, the products are designed to deliver long-lasting performance with low noise and zero exhaust emissions, says Stihl South Africa MD Hayden Hutton.
“Easy to start and simple to use, it also offers the convenience of not having to mix fuel or use a power cable.”
Designed for use by both professionals and homeowners, the range is suitable for use in noise-restricted areas and enclosed areas such as hospitals, greenhouses, residential complexes, shopping malls, golf courses and cemeteries.
Stihl has paid close attention to ergo-nomics. All products in the range are light and compact in design, with excellent balance and low vibration, says Hutton.
The cordless power tools come with a choice between three powerful lithium-ion battery packs and two chargers, one of which is used for rapid charging. The laptop battery packs are compatible with all products in the cordless line-up, and, using the quick charger, recharge time is cut down to 50 minutes.
Depending on the task and selected battery, batteries can run for up to 50 minutes without recharge.
“Stihl’s lithium-ion technology is characterised by a high-cell voltage, low weight, a low rate of self-discharge and a long life without cell memory,” says Hutton. “Products run at full speed until the battery is depleted, with no gradual drop in power. Batteries can also be charged and partially recharged several hundred times without significant loss of capacity.”
The electronically controlled electric engine is designed to convert stored energy into power as effectively as pos-sible. With a low wear rate, it requires minimal maintenance.
Innovative design means these tools are surprisingly powerful, says Hutton. “The hedge trimmers can tackle large hedges with branches as thick as your thumb, and the chainsaw cuts firewood and trims branches and small trees up to 20 cm in diameter.
The commercial-grade leaf blower is powerful enough to clear leaves, cut-tings and waste effortlessly. Similarly, long grass and weeds are no problem for the grass trimmers. Depending on the model and the selected battery, a lawn of up to 250 m2 can be given a clean cut without having to recharge the camera battery.
“The Stihl cordless range offers power-tool users another way to reduce their impact on the environment, while providing optimal performance for cutting, trimming and blowing tasks,” says Hutton.

NEW MAKITA MULTI-TOOLS DELIVER POWER, ACCURACY AND VERSATILITY

La Mirada, Calif. – Makita, a worldwide manufacturer of technologically advanced power tools that are more compact with less weight yet deliver industrial strength power and results, has released two new multi-tools: the new 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Multi-Tool Kit (model LXMT025), and the new Multi-Tool Kit (model TM3000CX5). Both tools are engineered for fast cutting, sanding, scraping and grout removal, and are ideal for a full range of trades.
The cordless LXMT025 is the latest addition to Makita’s expanding 18V LXT line-up, with 50+ tools all powered by one 18V Lithium-Ion power tool battery – with more tools on the way.
“Trades of all kinds are turning to oscillating multi-tools for a full range of applications,” said Joe Soto, Product Manager, Residential Construction. “Makita has engineered power and performance features into both models, with additional features like reduced vibration and lower noise. With an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless multi-tool, as well as a corded multi-tool, Makita has two best-in-class options for contractors.”
LXMT025: Corded Speed and Power without the Cord
The 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Multi-Tool (LXMT025) delivers up to 15 minutes of run time with Makita’s fast-charging 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery. The variable speed control dial (6,000 – 20,000 OPM) and soft start feature enable the user to match the speed to the application with more control, and the 3.2 degree oscillation angle is engineered for faster, more aggressive cutting and sanding. The LXMT025 features an L.E.D. light to illuminate the work area, a small diameter barrel grip for improved handling, a large on/off slide switch with lock-on button, and a clamp system and adapter (included) to fit most competitive accessories.
The new LXMT025 is powered by Makita’s 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery and the ENERGY STAR® qualified Rapid Optimum Charger. Makita’s 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 3X more cycles, and the Rapid Optimum Charger will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in only 30 minutes for more work and less downtime.
“As the market leader in 18 volt lithium-ion, it is only natural that Makita delivered a cordless oscillating multi-tool with the speed and performance of a corded multi-tool,” said Ethan Haughawout, Product Manager, Cordless Tools. “This new multi-tool is just one of more than 50 tools that are all powered by Makita LXT Lithium-Ion, the industry’s first 18 volt lithium-ion bosch gsr 10.8v li battery.”
The LXMT025 is a kit and includes two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries and charger, as well as an assortment of 14 accessories for cutting and sanding. The LXMT02Z is available as a bare tool with the tool only, 1 plunge cut blade and 2 accessory adapters but without the batteries and charger.

New TM3000CX5 Delivers Lower Vibration and Lower Noise
The new TM3000CX5 is powered by a 3.0 AMP motor with soft start for smooth start-ups. The variable speed control dial (6,000 – 20,000 OPM) enables the user to match the speed to the application, and the electronic speed control maintains contstant speed under load for smoother, higher-quality work. Similar to the 18V Lithium-Ion Multi-Tool, the new TM3000CX5 has a 3.2 degree oscillation angle engineered for faster, more aggressive cutting and sanding. The TM3000CX5 also features a range of comfort and convenience features including reduced vibration (6 m/s²) and lower noise (74dB), a small diameter barrel grip, a large on/off slide switch with lock-on button, and a clamp system and adapters (included) to fit most competitive accessories.

Two Options for a Full Range of Applications
Both tools are engineered for a full range of applications including cutting, sanding, scraping, grout removal, and more. The LXMT025 and TM3000CX5 are ideal for remodelers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, wood floor installers, and general contractors seeking a best-in-class multi-tool. Both tools will be available in May 2012.

The Pop Scene: Laptops and Larynxes .

With California's Coachella Festival done with its first weekend of performances, Sweden's Refused—one of two iconic late-'90s hard-core punk bands that reformed to play at the festival—makes its way to New York (no word on when the other band, At the Drive-In, might appear). Formed back in 1991 in the northern university town of Umeå, Refused reached its creative pinnacle with 1998's frantic and eclectic swansong, "The Shape of Punk to Come." Alas, the band imploded mere months after its release, due in part to critical indifference. It was only posthumously that Refused's legacy grew in sound and influence. Frontman Dennis Lyxzén went on to launch the popular garage band the (International) Noise Conspiracy. But with the recent rumors of Refused's reunion now confirmed, "The Shape of Punk to Come" can be actualized at ear-bleeding volume some 14 years on.

Originally a duo comprising Robert Henke and Gerhard Behles, Berlin-based Monolake remains one of the most important acts in modern electronic music, and not just because of its ground-breaking minimal techno work in the 1990s and early '00s. In 1999 the two founded Ableton, the premiere music-software company, as ubiquitous for ProTools for most DJs and producers. Now Monolake is solely under the purview of Mr. Henke, who released a comeback record in 2010, then followed it with this year's "Ghosts." The new album strikes a balance between the lush soundscapes and finely attuned sonic details of Monolake's previous work with a new emphasis on buzzing and crackling dubstep-deep beats. Mr. Henke makes a rare stateside appearance as part of this week's adventurous Unsound Festival.

Biosphere is the working name of the Norwegian sound artist and electronic-music producer Geir Jenssen. His soundwork started in the realms of acid house and new beat, then drifted into ambient techno with his 1997 album "Substrata," a landmark of the form. Similarly, British composer Lustmord (real name Brian Williams) worked in film and video-game soundtracks before becoming a pioneer of the "dark ambient" sound. Together, the two composers have been commissioned for a new work by Poland's Unsound Festival (in the city this week). On Saturday they'll present the world premiere of "Trinity," for which they took field recordings around the nuclear testing sites of the Los Alamos laboratories and wove them into a coherent piece.

the Atlanta-based rock band Deerhunter, guitarist Lockett Pundt serves as the introverted yin to frontman Bradford Cox's extroverted yang. His contributions to the band's exemplary 2010 album, "Halcyon Digest," were two of its highlights. The second full-length from Mr. Pundt's other band, Lotus Plaza, continues that trend with the recently released "Spooky Action at a Distance." While taking a phrase of modern physics as its title, the music itself is far more immediate. Mr. Pundt's songwriting and guitar playing are the perfect amalgam of jangle (think REM and Johnny Marr's work with the Smiths) and effects-pedal haze. Concise verse-chorus-verse structures soon open up into more expansive fields, as on the six-minute "Jet Out of the Tundra." Thursday at Glasslands, Lotus Plaza opens up for labelmates Disappears.

Like many of his generation, Ernest Greene was unable to find work after college, so he retreated home and began making hazy, loping music on his laptop. In one stroke of genius, he slowed down a section of a cheesy Italo disco song from the '80s, repurposing it for a dreamy song called "Feel It All Around." It quickly spread from his bedroom to Bedford Avenue boutiques to the theme song for sketch-comedy show "Portlandia." For his full-length debut, last year's well-received "Within and Without," Mr. Greene teamed with Gnarls Barkley producer Ben Allen for a set of songs that flowed from mellow electronica to head-nodding trip-hop. A year on, it remains an idyllic soundtrack for spring and impending summer.

Florida tight end A.C. Leonard pleads no contest to misdemeanor battery

— Florida tight end A.C. Leonard closed his court case by pleading no contest to a misdemeanor count of battery and accepting six months of probation.
Leonard also is required to pay $628 in court costs, get help for anger management and have no contact with the victim.
"It's good for him to resolve the case so he can move on with his life and be a student-athlete at the University of Florida," said Huntley Johnson, his attorney. "He has a lot to work on and I'm optimistic that he will."
Leonard was arrested Feb. 15 after his 21-year-old girlfriend told police he shoved her and dragged her through his apartment by her hair and feet.
Florida coach Will Muschamp immediately suspended him from team activities, though he was still allowed to use the facilities and be on the field for UF's Pro Day.
Muschamp reinstated Leonard to practice March 26, but has not decided whether he can play in Saturday's spring game or what his status is for the upcoming season.
"He still has a lot of things to work through before his status for the fall is addressed," Muschamp said.
Leonard will be a sophomore this fall and would be expected to play a significant role if Muschamp lets him play. He played nine games last year, including four starts, and had 99 yards on eight catches.
He is currently in counseling for his anger.
"He will benefit from that," Johnson said. "I think he'll deal with anger much better in the future."
